IN MEMORIAM
ALI mourns the loss of Eric Biel, a member of its Advisory Board, colleague, and friend. Eric dedicated his life to advancing human rights and worker rights. His legacy is reflected in government policies and corporate practices that have improved workers’ lives around the world. He was most recently at the Fair Labor Association (FLA), where he led initiatives to protect workers’ rights and improve working conditions through adherence to international labor standards. He also developed and taught a course on Business and Human Rights at Georgetown Law School, for over a decade.
Prior to joining FLA, he spent five years as the Associate Deputy Undersecretary in the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB), coordinated the Bureau’s work on private sector engagement, supply chain issues, and labor rights in a range of countries. Earlier in his career, he was the Deputy Under Secretary for Trade Policy at the Department of Commerce, and International Trade Counsel for the Senate Finance Committee.
In addition to being a wonderful colleague, Eric was also a warm and compassionate friend who will be deeply missed.
