ALI Conversation with Congressman Jimmy Gomez: Trade and Labor
/ALI hosted a conversation with Representative Jimmy Gomez, member of the House Ways and Means Committee to discuss the intersection of trade and labor. The Congressman discussed that there are very early conversations regarding Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) renewal, and that a new TPA must reflect the values of USMCA in terms of labor and the environment. The conversation included a discussion of the USMCA’s rapid response mechanism for settling labor disputes and the importance of that mechanism working well to give workers the confidence that trade can benefit workers. The conversation also discussed the Ways & Means Committee’s Racial Equity Initiative and how the recommendations may be used to spread the benefits of trade more equitably. The Congressman also discussed the 232 tariffs and the negative impact on companies in his district, and his work with the Administration to find a solution.
