ALI hosted a robust discussion regarding U.S. Global Engagement, especially in the Global South. The group discussed how to use America’s competitive advantages like development financing and its venture capital industries to leverage engagement in countries where the U.S. faces competition with China. There was discussion of the prospects for sectoral or supply chain agreements, as well as how countries could advance from preference arrangements, like GSP and AGOA, into full trade agreements. Finally, the group discussed the importance of upskilling America’s workforce in order to compete in a rapidly changing world. With GSP AGOA reauthorization, and the review of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement on the horizon there was discussion regarding the merits of preference programs and how countries advance from preferences into full trade agreements.
