U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai
Congressman Don Beyer
ALI Members Only Event
ALI hosted U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai for an intimate conversation discussing the current trade agenda and plans for the second half of the Administration.
The conversation reflected the geopolitical shifts impacting international trade, including pandemic supply shocks, the Russian invasion of the Ukraine, the decline in U.S.-China relations and climate change. Widening economic inequality and the resulting anti-trade backlash, has necessitated the development of a more inclusive, worker-centric trade policy that is more resilient and sustainable.
Congressman Beyer echoed these remarks, also emphasizing the importance of reforming and strengthening the WTO. On China, participants raised concerns about the rapid decline in bilateral relations and the absence a comprehensive U.S. China strategy, along with the lack of official dialogue with China. On friend-shoring, participants noted optimism about a US-EU green steel deal and discussed the complexities of working out a favorable electric vehicle supply chain under the IRA.
