ALI hosted a working dinner with Reps. Ami Bera and Val Hoyle, together with numerous other experts, to discuss “The Path Forward for U.S.-China Relations.” Participants noted that China is watching America’s current chaos and dysfunction, which it views as an opportunity to fill the void in global leadership. Experts noted that it will be difficult for the U.S. to reach a deal with China limiting its overcapacity in key sectors, since this is the main vehicle for stimulating its domestic economy. The conversation highlighted the need to continue the small garden and high fence approach to protecting U.S. technology, as opposed to further decoupling, as well as the importance for the U.S. to continue to invest in education and technology to run faster and compete.
