ALI hosted a webinar with Congressman Greg Stanton of Arizona and Vanessa Rubio, a three-time Vice Minister in Mexico, currently at LSE, and Canada expert, Christopher Sands to discuss USMCA and U.S. Relations with Mexico and Canada.  The discussion was moderated by McLarty Senior Counselor, Kellie Meiman,  who was formerly a Foreign Service Officer in Latin America and then a Latin America trade negotiator at USTR. Congressman Stanton made the point that if the U.S. wants to be competitive with China, reinvigorating the North American partnership and ensuring a strong and secure North American supply chain is critical. He acknowledged that while USMCA has room for improvement, it has been an innovative agreement that won strong bipartisan approval in the U.S.  Vanessa Rubio made the point that if the tariffs go to far, they will undermine Mexico’s economy and encourage more Mexican immigration to the U.S.  All the panelists expressed grave concern regarding the Administration’s announcement of 25% tariffs on auto and auto parts, given the complete integration of the autos supply chain across the three countries.
